Dr. Florian Merget has joined RWTH Aachen University in 2002. In the group of Prof. Kurz (Institute of Semiconductor Electronics, IHT) he was doing basic research on optical and electrical phase change memory devices. During this time he became well acquainted with semiconductor process technology.

In 2008 he joined the silicon photonics group as project manager and was responsible for the acquisition and the execution of silicon photonics related projects at IHT.

In addition to nationally and EU funded basic research targeted projects he has initiated and led three major projects partially funded by the Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (INNOTRANS, MISTRAL and SHyWA) with close industrial collaboration to device component manufacturers and system integrators. Through these projects the main building blocks for an active silicon photonics technology platform at IHT and its foundry partner AMO GmbH, including charge based and pockels based modulators, Ge/Si hybrid detectors and passive filters. Besides the coordination of the different activities of the different industrial and academic partners F. Merget focused his research activity on the modeling and numerical simulation of the developed devices.

In 2011 he joined the newly established silicon photonics research group (L&F Integrated Photonics, IPH) of Prof. J. Witzens as Staff-Scientist. Here he focuses on high-speed modulation devices that are specifically targeted to meet the needs of next generation telecom and datacom applications.
