Syllabus of the lecture – Optical Telecommunications 2: Systems

1. Transceiver Architectures

Block-diagrams of transmitters and receivers, direct laser modulation and external modulation, offset compensation, clock data recovery, transimpedance amplifiers, limiting amplifiers.

2. Fundamentals of Signal Analysis

Eye diagrams, signal quality factors, bit error rate, deterministic and random jitter, noise models.

3. Effect of bandwidth limitations

Bandwidth limitations, inter-symbol interference, pre-emphasis and equalization.

4. Noise in optical systems

Johnson Nyquist noise in optical receivers, shot noise, relative intensity noise, amplified spontaneous emission, link budgets.

5. Optical Keying

On-Off Keying (OOK), Differential Phase Shift Keying (DPSK), Differential Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DQPSK), constellation diagrams, coherent detection, optical OFDM.

6. Limitations of long haul systems

Nonlinear effects in long haul communications systems, self-phase modulation, cross phase modulation, four wave mixing, Raman and Brillouin scattering. Chirp, dispersion, amplified spontaneous emission and overall link analysis.

7. Metro & Long Haul System Architectures, Technologies

Wavelength division multiplexed systems (WDM). Metro and long haul architectures. Submarine fiber technology.

8. Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Systems

Passive Optical Networks and point-to-point networks. Next Gen. WDM-PON. Technological constraints and implementations.

9. Datacom-Systems

Single mode and multimode datacom systems. Restricted mode launch. 850 nm and 1310 nm technologies. Optical standards for data-centers and high performance computing.

10. Analog Optical Links

Coax over fiber, applications in radar remoting and instrumentation, constraints and limitations related to linearity, shot noise and relative intensity noise.

11. RF Photonics

Optical phase locked loops, mixed domain oscillators…
